THE TEN PRINCIPLES FOR BETTER MEMORY

In order to remember well, in order to memorize effectively and efficiently, we must follow the following ten principles consciously:-

1. ASSOCIATION
We know what a line is. If we put four lines of equal length together, and to end, we make a square. If we put six squares together, the result will be a cube. That is simple, isn't? But nobody could understand the meaning of a cube without knowing what a line is and what a square is.
What is true in geometry is true in every phase of life. We learn and remember a thing that is new to us only by connecting it with something that we already know. There is no other way of acquiring knowledge.
You will immediately see the truths of this statement if you think of learning Sanskrit language. In order to learn that water is JAL in Sanskrit, we must form a connection between water & JAL and only if this connection or association is strong it will enable you to recall the Sanskrit word whenever we need it. Once the path between water and JAL is firmly established in our brain we will recall the one or the other without conscious effort and even without our will.
Of course, I am fully aware of the fact that till now you did not form such association consciously. Very frequently we are not even aware of forming associations at all. We do it subconciously just as a little child connects the word daddy with his father without knowing anything about connection and associations.
However, we will see in the following chapters that it is to our advantage to form our association consciously, and to form our connections in a way which fits our type and requirements of our own personal memory.

2. CONFIDENCE IN MEMORY
Have faith in your memory, you must first have belief in your memory before you do something. Imbibe the following sentence firmly in your memory :- My brains is better than the best computer of this world.
If you think you cannot remember something well, you will not remember well. You may have met people often over 45 years of age making a remark: "Excuse me my memory is poor" or someone saying "I cannot recall your name" or "my memory is awful". The repetition of this statement that his memory is bad will result negatively only.
We should rather say to ourselves specially before and when we rise-up in the morning : "I trust my memory as I know it can work as good as a computer".
Just think how can we expect our memory to give good service when we continually abuse it and tell everyone that my memory is bad. Having confidence in memory is so important that I wish to write the above statement twice but insead I am leaving a blank space for you to write...........................................................................................................................................................
3. CONCENTRATION
Concentration is nothing more than hard thought which is fixed upon one thing at a time. Erase everything else from mind except that which you are seeing or hearing. Do not permit your thoughts to stray. Finally see yourself physically depositing that memory in you mental memory bank and when you are able to do this, you are concentrating. We can compare concentration to making a donkey move. More you push or ppull more it resists. Similar is the case of our concentration i.e., more we try to concentrate more our thoughts stray, the trick of making a donkey move is to dangle a vegetable in front of him and he will follow where ever you feel like.
So to concentrate on a particular subject we must create an interest in that subject.

4. POWER OF SENSES
You must clearly see and hear before you can make a memory deposit you will able to withdraw later. Focus your sight on the object to be remembered and see it in your imagination, hear it, or perhaps taste or feel it. But in any case allow your senses to get into the act. When you permit your senses to become involved the impression is always keen and not easily forgotten. Try to involve all the following sex senses while memorizing or learning anything.
  • Sense of hearing
  • Sense of vision
  • Sense of smell
  • Sense of taste
  • Sense of touch
  • Sense of kinesthesia i.e., awareness of bodily position and movements

5. COLOUR

We all dream and also we somtimes get involved in day-dreaming. Occupationally we try to analyze our dreams or discuss our dreams with friends. But have you ever given a thought regarding the colour of the dream whether the particular dream is coloured or just black and white.

Try analysing whether your dream is coloured or black and white. If it is black and white try to see it again consciously in colour and then try to analyse whether a particular dream is very clear or faded. If faded try to see it again in the screen of your imagination as clearly as possible. Whenever possible try to use full range of colour to make your picture and to make your thinking much more memorable.

6. EXAGGERATION

It is the characteristic of our brain that it takes the things in exaggerated form much more quickly and also retains that thing longer in our conscious mind.

So why not to use this characteristic in positive sense. Why not to use this beauty of brain for remembering things better.

Just imagine how difficult it would be to forget a fat person if we visualize his belly for a big pot and his face for a football.

7. PICTURE

Try to form a mental image of whatever you want to remember. Form a mental image of the thought, date, theory or anything else you want to memorise because making of mental image makes the memorising process fast.

8. SEX

Sex is a fielt of common interest. We all have good memory in this field. So use sex as an aid to memory whenever possible.

9. ODDITIES

Let's say you are a student and one day your teacher delivers the lecture with his helmet on his head. You will agree with me that you will never forget it for longer duration, so why not use this characteristic for memorizing things.

It is the beauty of the brain that it accepts silly, odd things quickly and also retain it for longer duration, so why not use this characteristic for memorizing things.

10. THOUGHTS

If not altogether impossible you will agree with me that it is very difficult to memorize abstract thoughts. Therefore it si vital to convert the abstract thoughts into some mental picture and then this mental picture will help us to recall the abstract ideas we want to remember.

Basically, we cannot deposit anything in our memory until we reduce it to something we can see or picture. Trying to deposit a thought without understanding is trying to deposit foreign money in our own bank account. To deposit foreign money in our own bank account, first we have to exchange it and convert it into equivalent Indian currency.

Similarly to deposit an abstract idea first we have to convert it into something which we can understand than to something we can visualize, only then our brain will accept it effectively.

FACTS ABOUT BRAIN

How to double your memory scientifically?
In today's arena of cut-throat competition, students spend most of their times in studies. In spite of that they do not get the desired result. Why?
* Failure to remember information
* Incorrect recall
* Inability to concentrate
* Ever-increasing syllabi.
Research: Capacity of Brain:-
According to one experiment, our brain can store up to two quintillion bits of information, that is two followed by eighteen zeros. It is equal to the mastering of forty languages, memorizing a complete encyclopedia and complete graduation from dozens of universities.
"The problem with us is not the capacity of the brain but our inability to manage that limitless capacity".
Solution:-
Scientists say we can compare our brain with a disorganized library, which has all kinds of collection of books with no catalogue or systamatic arrangement, making the search for a particular book, very difficult and sometimes impossible. The need of the hour is to build up a Mental Catalogue for our brain, which can help us in learning everything very fast, improving our power of retention and helping in fast and correct recollection.
Some Evidences:-
Dominic O'Brien, World Memory record holder (Guinness book of World Records) holds innumerable world records in memory, including memorizing a pack of shuffled playing cards in 40 seconds and memorizing 2000 binary digits in less than 30 mins.
A Russian journalist, Soloman Sherishevisikii, in the early nineteenth century, could tell at the age of 50, what he had done on every day of his last 25 years. He could even give the exact date and describe weather conditions during the day and say, what he had eaten for breakfast, lunch and supper on any given day.
Were they born with a computer memory?
Research and analysis has shown that people like Soloman Sherishevisikii and Dominic O'Brien were born with a very normal memory like anyone else but as children, they discovered a Synesthetic Power, through which they were able to learn everything fast, remember everything fast for very long period and recall a particular information instantly even after 15-20 years.
What is Synesthetic Power?
Answer:- It is the inbuilt ability of our brain to receive a particular information simultaneously through all the senses of our body and store it in a systematic manner by forming a kind of mental catalogue so as to make the remembering process 100 times more efficient.
Can we develop Synesthetic Power?
Answer:- In fact, we all are born with this power but only a few realize it and still fewer are able to use it. What we need to do is direct this power in the formation of a mental cataloging system, which can help us in our academic learning.
